Dear Mayor Muriel Bowser & Deputy Mayor Brian Kenner,
I, the undersigned, join Friends of Crummell School in urging that the restoration of the Alexander Crummell School exclusively for community uses be made an immediate priority. Crummell School has suffered years of neglect and city officials have broken many promises made to Ivy City residents about its restoration. Most recently residents were forced to sue the city to stop a polluting tour bus depot from locating at Crummell School. And, we were all disappointed when funds allocated in the city budget for the school’s renovation were removed earlier this year. The rehabilitation of the Crummell School and its grounds for exclusively community benefit as a center featuring recreational and educational opportunities, for community meeting space, and to provide badly needed green space has been specifically outlined in the Comprehensive Plan for years. The Crummell School is not vacant government land with which to pursue development, as you may perceive it to be. The site is a nationally designated Historic Landmark, the only known monument to the great Rev Alexander Crummell, with great significance to a historic African American community. Crummell is the heart of Ivy City and the neighborhood’s only public building and gathering space. If the city doesn't get this right, it will be a real injustice to the residents of Ivy City who have waited far too long, and fought many battles, to witness the rebirth of Crummell School. Please protect residents’ right to enjoy and benefit from their public space, and provide the programs and offerings that are needed to support Ivy City residents and those of surrounding communities.
